Virginia Museum of Fine Arts - Native American Art

The Assistant Curator for Native American Art at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) in Richmond, Virginia, seeks a highly motivated UVA undergraduate student intern for summer 2021. The internship will be virtual.  

INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION The UVA intern will work directly with the VMFA Assistant Curator of Native American art. Virtual projects include researching and preparing artist biographies and other support work for a planned exhibition of prints; assisting both the curator and registrar’s office with the ongoing maintenance of the permanent collection of historic objects in conjunction with NAGPRA regulations; and assisting curator with research and development of planned programs with the Education Department for various audiences and age groups. As an outcome of this placement, the intern will have a portfolio of projects that will serve him or her in future career opportunities. Strong writing and communication skills, and background in art historical research are required.

This internship will be conducted entirely online, under the supervision of Dr. Johanna Minich, Assistant Curator for Native American Art, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

ELIGIBILITY Applications are open to rising 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year UVA students from all fields of study with a demonstrated interest in art historical research and writing. Familiarity or interest in Native American art and studies preferred. Applicants must be current UVA undergraduates in good academic standing. The successful candidate will be asked to complete a background check prior to placement.

HOURS/STIPEND The intern will spend approximately 30 hours per week for eight to ten weeks (approximately 300 total hours during the summer). The internship is supported by a $3,500 Mellon Indigenous Arts Grant.
